The ‘new’ Queens Center provides a first-class shopping environment for its namesake borough—a vibrant New York City market of over 2 million people in 687,000 households (per zip code demographics). Situated at the hub of mass transit and at the intersections of Queens Boulevard, the Long Island Expressway and Woodhaven Boulevard, the borough’s only regional mall offers easy access to residents and daytime workers, whether they are arriving by car, bus, subway or foot. A new additional parking garage enhances traffic flow to and from surrounding thoroughfares.
In 2002, Queens Center embarked on a $275 million expansion, renovation and modernization program. The results: more space, more amenities and more stores. The redevelopment, which was completed in late 2004, transformed Queens Center into a world-class suburban shopping center in an urban environment. A brand new JCPenney, an expanded Macy’s, and an expanded and relocated food court, have been accompanied by such new retailers as A X Armani Exchange, Banana Republic, bebe, United Colors of Benetton, Club Monaco, Coach, Godiva, Guess, MAC, Na Hoku, Swatch and Urban Outfitters completed major expansions or relocations.
All told, the center now offers nearly 1 million square feet of retail space, which includes the new 900-seat, 14-unit food court (complete with a children’s play area). In addition, atriums have been added to bring more natural light into the center, creating an open, airy feeling to the shopping environment. These and a host of other improvements incorporated in this massive redevelopment are certain to enhance Queens Center’s dominant position in its trade area, while maintaining its long-time status as one of the most productive malls in the entire United States. |
